Middlemount is a producing open-cut Bowen Basin coal mine owned through Middlemount Coal Pty Ltd, an incorporated joint venture between Yancoal Australia and Peabody Energy Australia. Conventional strip mining, dozer casting and truck-and-shovel fleets supply an on-site coal preparation plant producing hard coking and low-volatility PCI coal. The federally approved Southern Extension allows coal extraction to continue through 2044 and permits run-of-mine extraction of up to approximately 5.7 Mtpa.
