METLEN made the final investment decision on January 16, 2025 for an integrated €295.5 million programme spanning underground bauxite development and modernisation in the Parnassus–Giona district, expansion of the Aluminium of Greece alumina refinery at Agios Nikolaos from 865,000 to 1,265,000 tonnes per year, and construction of a 50-tonne-per-year high-purity gallium facility. The programme targets total bauxite capacity of approximately 2 million tonnes per year. Bauxite-related works were scheduled to start production in 2026, while initial alumina and gallium output is expected during 2027 and full-scale operation is targeted for 2028. The project received EU CRMA Strategic Project status in March 2025, €90 million of EIB financing in January 2026 and Greek strategic-investment approval in May 2026, with approximately €118 million of anticipated grants and tax incentives. Rio Tinto agreements secure 14.9 million tonnes of imported bauxite supply over 2027–2037 and alumina offtake from the expanded refinery.
