The Peter Mitchell Mine is a producing open pit on a 10-mile segment of the Biwabik Iron Formation near Babbitt, Minnesota, with ore transported by rail for concentration and pelletizing at Silver Bay. Mesabi holds royalty and leasehold interests rather than operating ownership; Northshore Mining Company controls mining and pays base, bonus and fee royalties under the applicable lease arrangements.
