Latrobe Magnesium Limited is developing a proprietary combined hydrometallurgical and thermal-reduction process to recover magnesium metal and saleable by-products from industrial waste. Its Hazelwood North Demonstration Plant in Victoria has produced and sold magnesium oxide from brown-coal fly ash and is installing Phase 1B equipment for first magnesium-metal production. The company also plans a 10,000-tpa commercial plant in the Latrobe Valley and a 100,000-tpa international plant in Sarawak using ferronickel slag. The former is preparing for a bankable feasibility study, while the latter has completed the first phase of pre-feasibility work.
