Electra is evaluating a modular hydrometallurgical facility at its Temiskaming Shores refinery complex to process black mass from lithium-ion manufacturing scrap and end-of-life batteries. The proposed circuit would recover lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper and graphite, with recovered cobalt available to feed the adjacent cobalt sulfate refinery. A desktop scoping study was completed in 2023 and a feasibility-level Class 3 engineering study was completed in June 2025, but the later study's scale, capital estimate and financial returns were not publicly disclosed. Electra intends to consult battery manufacturers and OEMs before fixing the commercial scale, timing, capital requirements and offtake structure.
