The Chilwa Critical Minerals Project in southern Malawi combines heavy mineral sands, the Nakombe niobium-REE-tantalum-gallium discovery and ionic-clay rare-earth exploration. At Mpyupyu West, heavy minerals are residually concentrated in a laterally extensive, deeply weathered saprolite blanket at surface rather than transported aeolian and strandline sands; the free-dig mineralised horizon averages 7.3 metres thick and reaches 12 metres.
