Alcoa operates the Alumar aluminium smelter at São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, with a current 60% interest. Operations commenced in 1984; the smelter restarted in FY22 after care and maintenance since 2015. All three potlines continue to ramp up, with measures to improve stability following unplanned pot outages and December 2025 energy disruptions. Alumina is supplied by the co-located refinery. The proposed acquisition of South32's 40% smelter interest remains conditional.
