Alcoa operates the Alumar alumina refinery at São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, with a current 54% interest. The refinery commenced operations in 1984 and uses the Bayer process to refine bauxite into alumina supplied to local and export smelters, including the co-located Alumar smelter. South32's 36% refinery interest is part of the conditional acquisition and has not transferred.
